How environmentally friendly is DOOH?
Digital Out of Home is more resource-friendly than you might think. It reaches many people through few screens — without paper, without printing and often on renewable electricity. The key facts at a glance.

Around 5–6 g of CO₂ per 1,000 contacts — one of the lowest-emission advertising channels, measured against reach.
No paper, no printing, no transport — artwork runs digitally and can be updated at any time.
Reach with a small footprint
According to the Green GRP study, DOOH causes only around 5 to 6 grams of CO₂ per 1,000 contacts — considerably less than many other advertising channels.
A single screen generates tens of thousands of contacts a week. The same reach through mobile advertising would need thousands of individual devices — each with its own energy and data consumption.
DOOH screens often run on electricity from renewable sources — which improves the environmental balance further still.
Artwork is played out and updated digitally — without printing, without pasting, without delivery and without disposing of physical posters.
A win-win for the brand and the environment
IDOOH – Initiative Digital Out of Home puts it plainly: DOOH protects the climate and the environment while improving campaign performance at the same time. Advertisers can cut their CO₂ footprint without compromising on reach or impact.
The reason lies in the “One-to-Many” principle: a digital screen reaches a great many people, whereas the same reach through personal devices would consume many times the energy across networks and data centres. Measured against contacts, DOOH is therefore one of the lowest-emission advertising channels.
On top of that: no printed posters, no paper, no transport to the site and no disposal. Content is played out digitally and can be updated at any time — resource-friendly and flexible.
The figures are based on IDOOH – Initiative Digital Out of Home and the Green GRP study cited there. More information: idooh.media.
